Hazor, probably the most important of the Canaanite cities, was strategically situated in the Jordan Valley north of the Sea of Galilee. It was occupied from around 2800 BC to the 2nd century BC and, at its greatest, once boasted a population exceeding 25,000 people.
It was reputedly destroyed by Joshua in the 13th century BC, but was soon repopulated.
Fortified by King Solomon of Israel and rebuilt by King Ahab in the first half of the 9th century BC, the city was crowned by a citadel, and had numerous administrative buildings such as this store-house.
King Tiglathpileser III of Assyria destroyed the city in 732 BC, bringing an end to its independence.
